3 THINGS YOU NEED TO BE DOING TO PROTECT YOUR COLOR TREATED HAIR

  1. Choosing The Correct Products

The first step you should take in protecting your new color is picking out the best shampoo and products for your needs. You should opt for sulfate free shampoos and conditioners specifically designed to protect your fabulous new color. Sulfates aren’t great for your hair because they can strip away your color and moisture. Sulfate free options are going to be gentler on the hair, making your color last a whole lot longer. I suggest Redken Color Extend Magnetics shampoo and conditioner. It’s infused with cranberry oil to seal the cuticle and lock in color and moisture.

2. Minimize Shampooing Frequency

Shampooing your hair everyday can lead to color fading and adds a lot of stress to your strands. Give it a break, aim to was your hair once or twice weekly. When you do shampoo your hair, use lukewarm/cool water. Hot water can open the cuticle layer of your hair and lead to color fade out and possibly frizzy hair. Cold water helps to seal the cuticle layer locking in all of your color plus moisture. You can handle 2 minutes of cool water for the lasting effects of your color retention.

3. Take Caution with Heat Styling

Heat styling tools, such as flat irons and curling irons, can fade hair color. Minimize use of these tools and always use a heat protectant while wet AND spray before styling, to create more of a barrier between your hair and the heat. UV rays can be just as harsh. Be sure to wear a hat when spending extended time outdoors to shield your locks from the suns harmful rays. My favorite two heat protectants are Keratherapy Daily Smoothing Cream which is heat activated and Redken Quick Blowout spray.
