Essentials of Dry Shampoo: Guidelines and Best Practices

Okay, we’ve all been there— third day hair and zero time to shampoo it. Dry shampoo to the rescue!! But hold up, lets make sure you are using your dry shampoo effectively!

First things first, dry shampoo is meant for your roots only. There’s no need to put it all the way through your hair. Just put a little on your roots to soak up all the grease. You want to apply it sparingly, a little goes a long way. Let’s not spray it like we’re trying to frost a cake. All that’s going to do is leave us with more product build up and add to the problem. You’ll want to hold the can about 8 inches from your head and spray in small bursts in a sweeping motion.

Once you’ve applied it to your roots, don’t immediately brush it out. Let it sit for a minute so it can’t actually do its thang! Personally, I like to add mine at night and let it set in all night to soak up the oils. After it’s sat for a couple of minutes, or overnight, you want to either brush through you or hair or shake it through a little bit just to make sure it’s not noticeable.

Additionally, you want to make sure you pick the correct dry shampoo for your needs. There are several different options when it comes to dry shampoo such as; color, texture, and absorbency. I’ll list my current favorites below and add what they’re good for. If you would like me to tell you your best option, comment below. Include your hair color, whether you like volume or not and how long you use dry shampoo before you shampoo again.

Amika Perk-up Dry Shampoo is good for darker hair tones. It does not have any texture to it so it’s good if you rather a softer feel. Amika also makes a Perk-up PLUS Dry Shampoo that is meant to extend your hair even longer than the original with scalp nourishing ingredients.

IGK First Class Charcoal Detox dry shampoo is another dark hair safe option. In my opinion this one doesn’t soak up quite as much oil as the other 2 options I’m going to give you. This one does have a little bit of texture if you like a little bit of volume and lift with your refresh. First Class also offers scalp soothing features similar to perk up plus.

L’ange absolutely killed it with their Deja Vu Dry Shampoo. This is my personal go-to. So obviously it’s good for darker hair. This is also the one that adds the most texture to your hair. It’s almost like a combination of a texture spray and dry shampoo in one. I’m not a fan of flat hair, so as my hair gets dirtier and heavier Deja Vu is my best friend.
